As I mentioned in the previous post, my sister’s birthday is at the end of July and she is one big Miss Piggy fan. The patterns for the lovely pig I found on the interwebs didn’t quite convince me, so I decided to make my own. The reason this is limited to the head is because this is meant to be a keychain. You can certainly add to it and give it arms, legs or a beautiful pearl necklace.
Miss piggy keychain
I used a 3.75 crochet hook. There’s no gauge for the pattern, the bigger the hook the bigger the head.
For the yarn, I used Lily’s Sugar ‘n cream:
– Lily’s Sugar ‘n cream scents in Camomille
– Lily’s Sugar ‘n cream in yellow
You will also need:
Felt
Embroidery needle and floss
Head
The head is crocheted in a spiral so there are no joins or chains at the beginning of each round. Use a stitch marker if needed.
Chain 4, join in the round with sl st
Round 1: 6 sc in the ring (6sc)
Round 2: 2 sc in each sc around (12 sc)
Round 3: *(2sc, 1sc), Repeat from * around (18 sc)
Round 4: *(2sc, 1sc, 1sc), Repeat from * around (24 sc)
Rounds 6-8: 1 sc around
At this point you want to add the hair, see below
Round 9: *(sc2tog, 1 sc, 1sc) Repeat from * around (18 st)
Stuff the head firmly with fiberfill
Rpund 10: *(sc2tog, 1 sc) Repeat from * around (12 st)
Round 11: sc2tog around, (6 st)
Close the head by sewing the hole tight
Ears
Make 2
Round 1: chain 2, 6sc in the second chain from hook (6sc)
Round 2: 1sc in each sc (6sc)
Round 3: sc2tog around (3sc)
Round 4: sc in each and cut the yarn, leaving a long tail to sew the ears to the head
Snout
Round 1: chain 2, 6sc in second chain from hook (6sc)
Round 2: 2sc in each sc (12sc)
Round 3: 1 sc in each st in back loop only (12 sc)
Round 4: 1 sc in each st through both loops
Cut the yarn leaving a long tail to sew to the head
Hair
To make curly hair, crochet a circle tightly, with a smaller hook than you’d normally use for the yarn. I used a 3 mm hook. Wet the circle and let it dry. Once dry, undo the circle and you’ll have some curly yarn which will serve as hair. Cut the yarn to 3 inch pieces and tie a knot to the end. To attach it:
Introduce the yarn in the needle hole from the side that does NOT have the knot. Then go from the inside of the head to the outside through the holes left by the sc stitches. Pull the yarn all the way out til the knot. The hair will be on the outside and the knot inside, preventing it from falling off. Repeat with as many strands as you want until the hair looks full enough.
To finish up
Sew the snout and ears to the head, leaving enough space for hair between the ears.
For the eyes: cut two circles of white felt and one with pink-ish felt. Cut the pink one in half. Each half will be one eyelid. With blue embroidery floss, make an embroidered circle at the center of the white felt circles. Then make a smaller black circle over the blue floss. Glue the eyelid to the top of the eye and the whole eye to the head.
And you’re done! enjoy!
